Citycare Water’s underwater remote-operated vehicle (ROV) performed reservoir inspections on the southern West Coast for the Westland District Council recently.
The ROV is an effective tool as it allows the council’s timber, concrete and steel reservoir assets to be kept online while the review for wear and tear is completed.
Thanks to the council’s infrastructure contractor, civil contracting firm Westroads, for commissioning these inspections for the remote communities of Haast, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef Glacier and Ross and the town of Hokitika.
The ROV operates in the dark of the covered tanks while the operator manoeuvres it remotely from outside.
The footage the ROV captures is seen on the controller’s 17cm viewing screen and then analysed back in the office for signs of wear and tear in the reservoirs.

Extensive planning happens between Citycare Water and New Plymouth District Council behind the scenes when major repairs are required for the water mains.
